While it might seem like a good idea to hire the first big-name pest control company that turns up in a search engine query on Google, Horacio explains, it’s important to remember that they have a high employee turnover rate, which can significantly affect the quality of service.

“It’s important to find out if the company and their staff are licensed. Just because pesticides are regulated by both the federal and provincial governments in Canada doesn’t mean there aren’t unskilled do-it-yourself companies out there using off-the-shelf products that can actually make pest problems worse,” Horacio notes. “It’s also important to find out if the company’s employees take continuing education courses to keep up with the most recent advancements in the ever-evolving pest control industry.”
According to Horacio, companies that provide a wide range of pest control services are more experienced in handling a variety of pest control issues. That’s why it’s important to ensure the chosen pest control experts have experience handling everything from ants, bedbugs, cockroaches, fleas, and wasps to birds, rodents, bats, raccoons, and skunks. In the end, it’s better to have one company with experience in dealing with a variety of pests.
A further consideration when hiring a pest control company, according to Horacio, is to verify that it has commercial liability insurance and Workplace Safety Insurance Board (WSIB) coverage. Not being adequately insured means a homeowner could be held liable for any injuries a worker sustains, or damages done to the property. Unfortunately, many pest control companies in the Greater Toronto Area do not have commercial liability insurance or WSIB coverage, Horacio notes.
